Adapted films educate, disciple oral people

A movie can bring the Scriptures to life imparting biblical concepts, cultural insights and a Christian worldview. To help serve the church in Guatemala, Viña Association works to adapt a select group of films into Mayan languages.

These films can be invaluable in oral cultures such as Guatemala’s Mayan peoples. They include Campus Crusade for Christ’s “JESUS” film or Mars Hill Productions’ “The Hope” video, which have been translated or adapted into the languages of many indigenous people groups.

Viña’s audio-video technicians sync the dialogue as closely as possible to the actors’ lip movements. The result is acceptable even among viewers who have a high level of media awareness.

Although direct syllable-to-syllable correspondence between the original and target language dialog is considered more professional, it often isn't practical when moving from languages whose ancestry is worlds apart, such as Indo-European languages and Mayan languages. Complex morphology, especially on verbs, often double the phrase length of Mayan languages compared to English or Spanish.

Many of the films and videos Viña uses, impart layers of new content, making them ideal for multiple showings. Repeated viewings allow the audience to grasp the concepts and be able to pass them on to others.
